Welcome to Your First Day at Pony Club
Starting Pony Club is an exciting milestone for both riders and their families. Your first day is all about having fun, meeting new friends and learning in a safe, supportive environment.
If you're feeling excited and a little nervous, don't worry – almost everyone feels that way on their first day! Your instructors understand that everyone starts somewhere, and every experienced rider was once a beginner. Pony Club is designed to help you develop your skills one step at a time.
Before You Arrive
Your club will let you know what time to arrive and where to go when you do. When you arrive, you'll usually be greeted by a club volunteer who will show you around and introduce you to your instructor and riding group. It's a good idea to arrive 20–30 minutes early so you have plenty of time to settle your horse, get tacked up and introduce yourself.
Remember to bring:
Your approved riding helmet.
Riding boots with a smooth sole and small heel.
Comfortable riding clothes suitable for the weather.
Your horse or pony and their equipment.
If you're unsure about any equipment, don't stress. Pony Club members and instructors are always happy to answer questions and help newcomers. Or you can check out the national gear rules.
Safety Comes First
Every Pony Club day begins with a gear check. Instructors will check that your gear is safe and fits your pony correctly. These checks help create a safe environment for everyone.
After this your lesson will start. Pony Club ridden activities include flatwork, jumping, polocrosse, horse ball, games and so much more.
You might also have non-ridden lessons, throughout the year you'll also learn practical horse management skills such as: grooming, nutrition, horse health, basic first aid and equitation science.
These skills help riders become knowledgeable horse owners and responsible horse people.
Making New Friends
One of the best parts of Pony Club is the friendships you'll make.
You'll meet other riders who share your passion for horses, work together during activities and cheer each other on. Many lifelong friendships begin at Pony Club.
Parents often become part of the Pony Club community too, helping with events, fundraising and supporting club activities.
Looking Ahead
As you gain experience, you'll have opportunities to work towards Pony Club certificates, participate in rallies, camps, competitions and fun club activities.
Whether your goal is to enjoy riding with friends or progress into disciplines such as dressage, jumping, eventing or mounted games, Pony Club provides a pathway to build confidence, horsemanship and lifelong skills.
